Grandfather Clock Parts

It is very interesting to note the manner by which grandfather clocks came by their name. Two brothers in Piercebridge, North Yorkshire, England, managed the George Hotel.

In the lobby stood a "floor clock" that kept incredibly accurate time, which in those days was very unusual.

This style of floor clock was not known for accuracy, but rather decorative purposes.

One of the brothers passed away and after that, the clock continued to lose time daily until the second brother passed away, at which time the hands of the clock stopped completely.

An American songwriter named Henry Work visited the hotel around 1875 and wrote a song about the fascinating floor clock.

In his song, he referred to the clock as "my grandfather's clock" and from then on, the free-standing floor clock was dubbed as a "grandfather clock".

The proper name today for this style of clock is a floor standing long case clock, but the affectionate term of grandfather clock still remains.

Crafted from woods like solid cherry, oak and ash, these fine pieces of workmanship are sure to bring elegance and class to your home or office.

Howard Miller, Klockit, and Hentschel are three top manufacturers of high quality grandfather clocks. If the clock stands over six feet tall, then it is considered a Grandfather.

Grandfather clock parts are few.

There are three parts to a pendulum clock that enable it to keep time accurately. The face of the clock, one or more weights, and the pendulum itself. The pendulum on a large grandfather clock swings about every two seconds.

Most grandfather clocks are powered by a weight-driven mechanical movement.

The clock is wound by raising each of the weights to the top of the trunk. One weight controls the chime, one for the strike and one simply to keep the clock running. A single wind will enable to clock to run for around eight days. Owners of these magnificent beauties usually designate one day per week to wind their clock.

The actual design of each grandfather clock is unique. The clock could have glass shelves, lights, a built-in wine case, or they can be designed in the traditionally simple manner which made them popular in the first place.

Many of the grandfather clocks made today come with a feature that gives the owner the choice of silencing the chimes during the night. Several different finishes are available in order to compliment your home's décor. No matter what design you choose, the grandfather clock is certain to beautifully adorn your home and bring you years of joy, not to mention accurate time.
