Country-Style Clocks
If you're decorating your home with a country-style theme, you should make
sure that all the little details fit in with your décor plans.
Country-Style clocks in particular will be a very important accessory to your overall look. A clock with a modern design will
already look out of place in your rustic style scheme, what more a digital neon clock that speaks at each hour?
Luckily, there are several country style clocks that you can find anywhere.
If you're not familiar with what clocks in a country-style home look like, a good example should be the grandfather clock, in its wooden frame
and swinging pendulum.
More fun if it had a little wooden cuckoo bird coming out to sing every hour on the hour.
If grandfather clocks are too imposing for you, why not go for those small mantle clocks that you can stand upright on any surface, including
your work desk, on the piano, or on, well, the mantle. These mantle clocks are also framed in wood and glass, although modern versions use clear
plastic instead.
But the wood is the most important part of the country-style mantle clock. Usually unpolished, sometimes carved, the grainier the wood, the
more authentic it feels. Look for mantle clocks made with oak, walnut, hickory, pine or cherry.
An alternative to wooden clocks are clocks made of plates. The plates, usually fully designed with paintings of fruit or flowers, serve as the
clocks' faces. These plates may be hung on the wall or placed on a plate stand.
If you're a real crafts person, there are unfinished wood clock frames that you can get from specialty and crafts stores, with clock face and
movements included in the package.
All you need to do is find a plain circular faced clock that will fit in the frame, so that
you don't have to build the mechanism from scratch.
With the batteries taken out of the country-style clock, you can replace the clock face with the face that comes with your frame or paint over
or peel off the existing numbers and paint or stencil in new numerals in your design of choice.
The hands of your Do-It-Yourself country clock should be supplied too, furthering that rustic look by replacing simple wand-like hands with the elaborate
curlicues.
The frame is bare for you to decorate in any way you like.
These wooden frames could simply be sanded and varnished just to keep that genuine country feel, or you could find adhesive vinyl or wallpaper
that looks like a wooden finish to stick onto the clock.
If you'd like to paint your frame, stick to the standard country colors of dark red or black.
Others will paint over the pendulum box, or behind the pendulum, quaint country scenes with special homey messages beneath.
Whichever style you go for, having country-style clocks is a beautiful accent to your rustic home décor. Small accents like
these make big impressions, as you will see on the hour.
